The Beginning
Poetry of Resistance was initiated in January 2025 at the Festival of Resistance, an international gathering of people from four continents: South America, North America, Europe and Australia. The festival was a celebration of resistance to the imminent inaugeration of the next President of the USA. Those present were in no doubt that fascism was about to be unleashed on the people of the USA and the entire world. They were not wrong. Even in the first year of the new presidency the world was thown into chaos by the 'bigot king' (see the poem of the same name). Countries were threatened with economic sanctions; people were abducted from the streets of US towns and cities and were transported like criminals to hell-hole prisons in El Salvador; Gaza was eyed as a grotesque 'Riveria' for the 'bigot king' (see the poem Real Estate); Canada, Greenland and Panama became playthings of the tyrant's imagination. Knowing what was about to happen and listening to the fears of friends and family, colleagues and acquantainces, two academics from Western Australia, Dr Paul Gardner and Associate Professor, Sonja Kuzich, launched Poetry of Resistance - a movement in which language is an incisive tool for solidarity and opposition - a movement of hope - and along with all the other movements of hope in a darkly chaotic world, a movement seeking a better, more just and more equal world.
